Skilled Hands and a Heart Full of Vision
Growing up, Dr. Lance Bergstrom delivered newspapers on his bicycle to 220 homes in South Fargo. “I earned about a penny and a half per house,” Dr. Bergstrom recalled, “but after stopping at A & W for ‘Coney Dog Tuesday’ (4/$1.00), I netted about a dollar.” Bergstrom has returned to his childhood neighborhood, opening Bergstrom Eye and Laser Clinic in 1997, also home to Nicole Collins, OD.
Walking into the clinic, patients are warmly greeted by staff in the woodsy atmosphere and cozy glowing stone fireplace. There’s even a Cozy Cove play area for kids! Above the fireplace mantel reads the sign, “In this room wait the world’s greatest patients. We thank you for being a part of what we do.” Just across the room, in a rustic hutch filled with antique vision artifacts, is another framed plaque explaining why M.D. stands for “My Daddy.”
“We know our patients by name,” Dr. Bergstrom noted. “The coffee is always on, and it may sound cliché, but we treat people how we would like to be treated.”
“It’s about quality of life, not quantity of life.” Dr. Lance Bergstrom
Dr. Bergstrom is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist, which means he is an M.D. who then goes on to specialize in eye surgeries and diseases. He’s performed thousands of eye surgeries; and when it comes to vision, he highlights prevention, maintenance, awareness and genetics as critical factors in eye care. “We often take vision for granted until a problem develops. Our desire is to educate about potential problems, risk factors related to age and genetics, and keep up with technology and state−of−the−art surgical and medical eye care.”
With a goal to provide world−class eye care close to home, Dr. Bergstrom’s office combines state−of−the−art equipment with the latest technology. Services include: LASIK and Laser Vision Correction, Cataract surgery, Advanced Lens Implant surgery for near and far vision, Implantable Contact Lens, Laser surgery, Eyelid disorders, Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma treatment, Pediatric eye diseases, cosmetic services and general eye exams.
“More often than not, we can help someone.” Dr. Bergstrom added. “It’s about quality of life, not quantity of life.” He recalls a young man that was injured in high school. After the removal of a cataract and restructuring of his pupil, he is now able to see without the aid of dark glasses. Dr. Bergstrom has also utilized his skilled hands to aid children’s vision from war−ravaged and impoverished countries.
“Many have been told, ‘There is nothing we can do.’ We have all the tools in the toolbox available,” noted Dr. Bergstrom. “Our patients range from newborns to age 103!”
After a full day, Dr. Bergstrom recalls another passion. “My real job is a full−time taxi driver, and I moonlight as an eye surgeon.” Even with a wife, four children, and four dogs, Dr. Bergstrom keeps a focused vision on his mission to serve others…both family and community.
Dr. Bergstrom resides in Horace with his wife Ruth; daughters Reyna and Rikka; and sons Luke and Leif.
